Tis the season to be shopping small-la-la-la-la... you get my point! That's right! You guessed it! This year my gift guide is all about shopping small! It's no surprise to you if you've been around here for a little while, that I am a huge fan of small businesses. Living here in Austin, and choosing the word 'QUALITY' as my word of the year for 2016 made me examine the root of each and everything that I purchase. I'm not perfect, but I always try to shop small when I can, and that is especially so during the holiday season. Many of my good friends own small businesses so this roundup seemed to be a long time coming. In this guide I'm hoping to introduce you to some brands that I really love, that maybe you haven't heard of yet and give you a few gift ideas in the meantime. So sit back, relax, and grab a cup of hot cocoa in your favorite reindeer mug!
My favorite shopping list each and every year is always the list with my girlfriends on it. I always hope that my gal pals feel celebrated + appreciated. I am a firm believer that sometimes gifting something from a person's list is the answer, but not for this category (at least not for me!) My goal is to always go off the beaten path here. This year I wanted to focus on fun and the unexpected for the ladies in my life. I was involved in a group text with some gals and we all decided that earrings and simple rings were timeless! I've also been eyeing patches for everyone on my list this year as well as nail polish in fun colors. Plus who doesn't love a little party?
This year's significant other category is DEFINITELY loosely inspired by my significant other: a cyclist with an affinity for socks, textiles, and good smells. My husband is actually a pretty easy person to shop for. When shopping for the love of my life, I always try to buy a few small and meaningful gifts that show I've been paying attention this year. And I always, always include socks in this gift.
Clients need love too, and the holidays are no exception! It's a good time to pop in and show your appreciation for their patronage of your business in the past year. It's also a good time to introduce them to past clients (three of five of this category are past clients of mine!) My favorite gifts for clients are always what I like to call simple luxuries: customized notebooks, coffee, beautiful artisanal coffee mugs, jam and biscuits to make at home, and candles that are changing the world.
With my birthday being the 20th and Christmas following shortly after, I always get asked what's on my list and I never know where to start so that's how this category was born! I always try and point friends and family in the direction of things that I've had my eye on for some time. These are just a few of my favorite things: some of my favorite lipsticks, a tassel, a velvet pouch, some pom poms for your ears, and a t-shirt that let's everyone know where you stand on queso.
And that's it for this year! You don't need a holiday to shop small + purchase meaningful gifts for those you love! All of the gifts from this guide are available for under $50 each as well! How cool is that?
I want to know: What are some of your favorite small businesses?
